How to open a Command Prompt window in Windows?

Command Prompt, or simply “CMD” for short, is a feature of Windows that provides an entry point for typing MS-DOS commands and other computer commands. By typing commands at the command prompt, you can perform tasks on your computer without using the Windows graphical interface.

So how do we get to a command prompt window in ours Windows computer?

Open a Command Prompt window in Windows

Applies to Windows 2000 and Windows XP
  • Click the Start button
  • Click Run
  • Type cmd
  • Click OK
Applies to Windows Vista, Windows 7
  • Click the Start button
  • Type cmd in the Search box at the bottom of the Start menu
  • And then click cmd.exe in the list of results
Applies to Windows 8
  • Type cmd in the Search box on the Start screen
  • And then click cmd.exe in the list of results

For Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7, here’s another way to open a Command Prompt window:

  • Click the Start button
  • Click All Programs (Applications)
  • Click Accessories
  • And then click Command Prompt
